Web Content – What is It?

Posted: SEO EXPERT on Mar 06 | SEO & Web Contents

Web content refers to what the user interacts with in a website which may be textual, visual or aural in form. These are what the user finds as texts, images, sounds, videos, and animations.

Web content is given different definitions by different authors and writers in internet. It is such a broad field which encompasses much stuff. In one definition, it may include “documents, data, applications, e-services, images, audio and video files, personal web page, archived e-mail messages, and more”.

The beginning of web content could be traced back to the time when information sharing was made possible using hypertext, hyperlink and page-based sharing. Websites then were given categories according to the kind content that it has. This was introduced with the advent of Mosaic and later Netscape.

The page concept then dominated the contents in internet. Linking one academic paper to another became an innovative idea, because these types of files were then the most common. It was during the late 80s and early 90s when it was common for references to be cited somewhere in a typewritten paper and then list these references either at the bottom of the page, or at the end of the academic paper.

Then came the idea of “home page”. This posed a sort of a distortion on the original meaning of “page”. This was the time when almost any one could own a “Home Page” which contained not just a “page” but many “pages in a single page”. This Home Page had relevant information about the owner. It may also contain links which may be other contents or anything that the owner wanted to be viewed.

HTML (hypertext markup language) content still makes up the majority of contents that are shared. The recent trend is to embed several protocols in it and this means that a single page may actually contain a number of “pages”. Even as this would be the case, there is still the adherence by owners to some ideas that are more or less common to all. Blogs, discussion boards, e-commerce sites, and search engine sites use html to a large portion of web content.
