African Nations cup
1996, South Africa
The 1996 Nations cup organized by South Africa witnessed the withdrawal of Nigeria for political reasons. The South Africans got their first trophy by beating Tunisia 2-0 in the final with a brace in two minutes from super sub Mark Williams.
1998, Burkina Faso
Egypt was on a date with its fourth cup. Both Hossam Hassan and Benny McCarthy couldn’t score a goal in the final match between Egypt and South Africa after both leading goal scorers got a tie with 7 goals each in this tournament. Egypt won 2-0 in the final with Ahmed Hassan and Tarek Mostapha on target.
Mahmoud El Gohary was the first to win this trophy as player and coach.
2000, Nigeria
Cameroon won their first trophy in the new millennium and their fourth overall after a breath-taking match against hosts Nigeria. It finished 2-2 on full time and Cameroon succeeded to win on penalties.
This was actually the first time since 1982 that the host country had lost in the final; both times the hosts were undone on penalties. This also meant that all of Cameroon’s titles so far were after beating Nigeria in the final.
2002, Mali
Again the indomitable lions were champions on penalties, and for a change they beat Senegal that time.
2004, Tunisia
Finally Tunisia was crowned African champions and deservedly so as they beat the likes of Senegal, Nigeria and Morocco on their way to lift the title. Some ugly scenes in quarterfinal matches between Tunisia & Senegal and Morocco & Algeria though marred this tournament.
This was also the first all Arabic final since 1959 when Egypt defeated Sudan 2-1, this time Tunisia beat Morocco by the same score.
AM OVERWEM THAT THE AFRICA NATIONS CUP HAS BEEN A VERY REMARKABLE TO THE AFRICAN MOTHER LAND AND THE REST OF THE WORLD.CAF IS ALSO DOING A GREAT JOB WE MUST GIVE EXCELENT TO THEM FOR THE GOOD WORK DONE SO FAR TO AFRICA FOTHBALL.
