African Nations cup

1976, Ethiopia

This tournament was the only time the champion was decided upon a league of 4 teams with Morocco eventually winning it.

1978, Ghana

Ghana hosted the tournament and beat Uganda 2-0 in the final to become the first country to win the title 3 times and retain the cup forever.

1980, Nigeria

For the second tournament in a row the hosts were champions. Lead by their legendary goal scorer Sigon Odigbamy Nigeria comfortably prevailed 3-0 against Algeria to win their first ever title.

1982, Libya

In 1982, the competition was played on artificial courts for the first and last time. The Libyans benefited from home advantage but were very unlucky to lose in the final to Ghana on penalties 7-6 as the match was locked at 1-1 after 120 minutes. This was indeed Libya’s only participation in the CAN’s history.

1984, Ivory Coast

In1984 the era of Cameroon began. Surprisingly hosts Ivory Coast went out of the first round. Nigeria played their 2nd final in 4 years but this time went down to a rampant Cameroon side by 3-1, this was to be the first of 4 titles for the indomitable lions.
