African Nations cup
1970, Sudan
This tournament witnessed the first ever television coverage of the CAN.
Zaire, the title holders, fell at the first hurdle while Ghana again reached the final only to lose to Sudan this time, El Sayed scoring the goal which gifted his country its only title so far.
1972, Cameroon
Hosts Cameroon reached the semis but against all odds lost to Congo who went on to stun Mali in an epic final 3-2.
1974, Egypt
For the second year running the host country, Egypt this time, lost in the semis in arguably the best match in the CAN’s history, Zaire were trailing the Egyptians 2-0 in front of a capacity crowd with only 15 minutes left, but in a frantic quarter of an hour Zaire scored 3 goals to reach the final against Zambia.
The final finished 2-2 and Zaire won the replay 2-0 thanks to 2 goals from Pierre Nday who was to become the tournaments’ highest ever top scorer with 9 goals. This was the first and last time a replay was needed as penalties were introduced in the following years.
