1962, Ethiopia
Ethiopia hosted the third tournament that witnessed new comers such as Tunisia and Uganda.
The Ethiopians proved their strength and stamina by reaching the final against Egypt, the match was locked at 2-2 at the end of the 90 minutes, but Ethiopia eventually won it 4-2 in the championships’ first ever extra time period.
1963, Ghana
Ghana got their first trophy that year. They were led by their famous trainer Charles Giamphy. The “Black Stars” shined to win 3-0 in the final against Sudan.
1965, Tunisia
Ghana succeeded to defend their title in Tunisia, overcoming the hosts in the final 3-1 after extra time. Only 2 players from the winning team of 2 years ago participated in this tournament.
1968, Ethiopia
As a sign of increasing popularity of the game in the dark continent, 8 teams participated in this tournament, and for the first time participating teams had to go through qualifying matches.
Ghana reached its third consecutive final, but this time they lost to Congo Kinshasa thanks to a Pierre Calala goal. Loran Pokou, the Ivory Coast player scored 6 goals to add to his 8 of the previous competition.
